New whitepaper from Winter Corporation on Big Data

We have posted a new whitepaper from Winter Corporation on Oracle.com/bigdata. The title is "Big Data: Business Opportunities, Requirements, and Oracle's Approach"
This paper is a great introduction to Big Data and explains how Oracle addresses the enterprise requirements for big data via its overall approach to data management, via its Engineered Systems. The first section provides an overview of Big Data and what this new term actually means. There is a breakdown of the three key areas usually associated with Big Data (Volume, Variety and Velocity) as well as a discussion about the additional Oracle derived key term: "value density".
It always helps to include some examples when explaining new concepts like these and this report looks at three areas:
  • E-Commerce and Consumer Marketing
  • Engineering and Manufacturing
  • Healthcare;
The examples provided for each industry have a number of things in common:
  • High volume to be analyzed
  • Data arriving for analysis at high velocity
  • Lots of data variety
  • Low value density
The consumer sentiment, which is one of the examples in the e-commerce and consumer marketing area, comes in mostly unstructured messages and text. In the other cases, there are multiple sources—some structured, some not. Most importantly in all the examples provide in the report there is "low value density".
The section on "NEW TECHNOLOGIES FOR BIG DATA" covers the different open source products that typically form the cornerstone of all Big Data projects, such as: Hadoop, MapReduce and nosql databases like Cassandra.
The last section looks at how Oracle's new Big Data platform and Engineered Systems can help customers quickly and easily deploy IT environments for Big Data and how Oracle's approach allows business users to to leverage the huge opportunities associated with “Big Data.”
The report is available for download on the Big Data page of Oracle.com (http://www.oracle.com/bigdata). Just look for the PDF link to "Analyst White Paper: Winter Corporation, Big Data: Business Opportunities, Requirements, and Oracle's Approach" just under the "Oracle Big Data for Enterprise" banner.
Enjoy.
