Pattern Matching lands on your BI dashboard!

Our BI team has added SQL pattern matching to their demo VM environment which is used by the sales teams and Oracle partners to demonstrate the capabilities of our BI system.

There is a short demo on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rgwAgckaiTU - "SampleApp V309 What's New Overview" which shows a SQL pattern matching dashboard in OBI EE.

If you jump to point 1:50 this is where the pattern matching content starts and it runs for about 15-20seconds - obviously there is a lot of great content so do please watch the complete video. The data set in the demo is the publicly available flight information data which is commonly used with the R language demos.

Complete Guide to Data Warehousing and Big Data at OpenWorld 2013

OOW Banner 2013
There's so much to learn at Oracle OpenWorld because it provides more educational and networking opportunities than any other conference dedicated to Oracle business and technology users.
What to expect at OOW 2013 - We will be announcing a wide range of continuous innovations from query optimization and partitioning to advanced analytics, Oracle Exadata and more. All these features make Oracle Database the world's most popular database for data warehousing. Join Oracle experts as we dive deep into the latest generation of database innovations for analyzing enterprise data and diverse big data streams to derive real business value from your data warehouse. You will also learn data warehouse best practices and hear from customers consolidating business analysis onto a common scalable platform. Hands-on labs for both beginners and experts give you the chance to try some of these innovative data warehouse technologies first-hand.
To help you get the most from this year's event I have put together a comprehensive guide of all the data warehousing and big data activities at OpenWorld 2013.
OpenWorld 2013

This guide is an extension to the recently published "Must-See" guide and it contains even more useful information:
  • Overview of OpenWorld
  • Video Guide to Data Warehousing with Oracle Database 12c
  • Comprehensive day-by-day session calendar
  • List of must-see sessions
  • List of hands-on labs
  • Global Leaders event, including annual Excellence Awards
  • Comprehensive presenter biographies
  • Profiles for key Data Warehouse customers
  • Links for more information
The guide is available in both Apple iBook format  (click here - please note this file is 200MB because it is packed full of videos, slideshows and other unique iBook features) for iPad and iPad Mini uses and PDF format  (click here) for all other platforms. (Please note that in PDF format some of the iBook features will not work such as the URL links that provide cross-referencing bookmarks and built-in 12c videos will not work).
There is a downloadable calendar (.ics file) available here which includes all the sessions, keynotes and hands-on labs listed in this guide. You can import this file into your own calendar application. Details of how to do this are included in this guide, see chapter 3.
Enjoy OpenWorld 2013  and if you have time please stop by the data warehouse section of the demo grounds and say hello.

Your list of Must-See Sessions for OOW 2013

Each year I put together a guide to OpenWorld which lists all the data warehouse sessions, biographies for the product managers who are presenting, links to a "Data Warehousing @ OOW" calendar and links to all the related product pages on Oracle.com and OTN. This year's guide will be bigger and more informative than ever! It will only be available in Apple iBook format and it will provide a multi-media guide to this year's conference. While I am waiting for this year's schedule to be finalised I thought it would be useful to share with you my hand-picked list of the must-see sessions and hands-on labs for data warehousing. This is basically an extract (a very small extract) from the forthcoming iBook guide to data warehousing at OOW 2013. This brief session guide contains the following information:

  • List of must-see data warehouse sessions
  • List of hands-on labs
  • Comprehensive presenter biographies

Sessions PDF

To make life easier for you I have prepared this information in both iBook (click here) and PDF format (click here). Now you can have the list of must-see sessions and hands-on labs so that all you need to do is add these events to your OpenWorld schedule builder once this goes live on the OpenWorld site. Each of the session titles is linked to its "home" page within the OOW content system. All you need to do is click on the title and then once your browser opens the OpenWorld content system you can quickly and easily add the selected session to your schedule - it could not be simpler!

And stay tuned for more information on the comprehensive, multi-media iBook guide to data warehousing and big data at OpenWorld 2013. This year's complete multi-media guide will contain the following information:

  • What to expect at OOW 2013
  • Database 12c for Data Warehousing: video interviews with George Lumpklin, VP for product management
  • List of must see sessions
  • Comprehensive presenter biographies
  • Video interviews with key data warehouse customers
  • Links to product pages on Oracle.com, OTN, social media sites, blogs etc

If you have an iPad or an iPad mini then get ready to download an indispensable iBook guide to this year's event (if you bought an Android tablet then it is not too late to sell it on eBay and get a proper tablet computer from those lovely people at the Apple Store). This iBook will be available shortly after the schedule builder application goes live on the OpenWorld site. More information to follow shortly...

Oracle Database 12c delivers big data and data warehousing for the Enterprise

We have just released a series of five short video interviews with George Lumpkin, Vice President of Product Management, on the new 12c features that related to big data and data warehousing. I am pleased to see the new SQL pattern matching capabilities get in mention in chapter 2 - a quick recap if you missed my recent blog posts

SQL Pattern Matching introduces a new SQL syntax, along with optimized performance, for detecting patterns in a sequence of events stored in a database table. For example, one might want to look for trends in a stock price, or for suspicious behavior stored in activity log. With Oracle 12c, these queries can be expressed in a simple syntax, without requiring recursive joins or other complex SQL constructs.

For more information on SQL pattern matching visit the home page on OTN (click here).

In the section on easier management, chapter 3, George discusses the new partitioning features that we have added to make general maintenance and information lifecycle management operations much easier.

Oracle Database 12c now allows partition maintenance operations on multiple partitions as single atomic operation: for example, you can merge the three partitions ‘January 2012’, ‘February 2012’, and ‘March 2012’ into a single partition ‘Q1 2012’ with a single merge partition operation.

We haves extended the concept of partition-based information lifecyle management with the addition of Automatic Data Optimization (ADO). This allows you to define policies that specify when storage tiering and compression tiering should be implemented for a given partition, based on the usage statistics automatically collected by Heat Map. ADO policies are automatically evaluated and executed by the Oracle Database without any manual intervention required, making it possible to experience the cost savings and performance benefits of storage tiering and compression without creating complex scripts and jobs. For more information on partitioning visit the home page on OTN (click here).

So, if you want to know more about how 12c can benefit your data warehousing and big data projects then listen to these five short video interviews:
