Thoughts on Larry Ellison’s Big Data Demo
Post on ITConvergence blog

Oracle founder and Chair Larry Ellison provided a Big Data demonstration the other day at Oracle OpenWorld. The results were impressive.

Lexis had a problem. It wanted to determine which Olympic athlete should it sponsor. A generation ago such decisions relied on a little bit of analysis and a lot of gut instinct.

But here in 2012 our social media-powered culture gives us hard data on which such multi-million dollar decisions can be based. The problem today, however, is that most companies have too much data – 5 million Tweets and 27 million other data points to be exact.

That’s where Ellison chose to show off Big Data, using it to sift through that data to find the ideal athlete to endorse Lexis. Ellison got everyone’s attention, but there’s a bigger story behind Oracle Big Data as we begin to investigate below…[Read more]

Additional dimensions of Big Data - discussion revived once more
Post on HadoopSphere blog

We have earlier as well heard of Big Data dimensions beyond the conventional 3 popularized by IBM and the akin: Volume, Variety and Velocity. The discussion is now revived once more after Mark Beyer, Gartner Research VP, addressed the gathering at Oracle Open World 2012 and brought his 12 dimensional framework for Big Data to the fore.

(Based on what has been heard, during the same session George Lumpkin, Vice President, Product Management also talked in grand Oracle fashion about Oracle’s In-Database Hadoop claims while the purists whispered their genuine queries on real time processing.…[Read more]

Oracle sheds more light on 12c database and Exadata X3 machine
The key feature of 12c, which is set for release sometime next year, is multitenancy, which enables users, if they desire, to create multiple &#34pluggable&#34 databases that reside within a single database container, senior vice president Andy Mendelsohn said during a keynote address. This constitutes "a fundamental re-architecture of the database," Mendelsohn added. "Now if I'm an administrator, I have one database overall to administer.".

Database 12c also makes much more efficient use of hardware resources, saving companies money, Mendelsohn said. For example, it incorporates a &#34heat map&#34 feature that tracks how frequently different chunks of data are used, allowing customers to archive rarely accessed information on lower-cost mediums.

Loaiza also provided a sense of the market uptake for Exadata, which was first introduced in 2008. He also sought to show audience members that Exadata is relatively easy to deploy, bringing on an executive from PayPal who described how the company took its Exadata from a pilot project to a "business decision platform" in just 60 days…[Read more]

Oracle OpenWorld: Oracle goes social
Oracle has, to no-one’s great surprise, entered the social media fray as an important adjunct to its existing efforts in big data analytics. The pairing has rapidly become the eggs and bacon of enterprise development into the future, as all aspects of social media are likely to become the most prolific creators of data that needs analyzing to tease out new market, product or market opportunities.

So, during his second keynote presentation of the week at Oracle OpenWorld, CEO Larry Ellison took the opportunity to announce the Oracle Social Relationship Management (SRM) Suite. This is an integrated enterprise service that enables companies to do all those things that help identify trends and opportunities, such as listen, engage, create, market, and analyse interactions across multiple social platforms in real-time. The objective, of course, is to provide as comprehensive and holistic view of customers and consumers as possible…[Read more]

Fast Data: Go Big. Go Fast.
Fast data processing (and especially real-time) has always been our credo at Oracle with each one of these products in Fusion Middleware. For example, Oracle GoldenGate continues to be made even faster with the recent 11g R2 Release of Oracle GoldenGate which gives us some even greater optimization to Oracle Database with Integrated Capture, as well as some new heterogeneity capabilities.

With Oracle Data Integrator with Big Data Connectors, we’re seeing much improved performance by running MapReduce transformations natively on Hadoop systems. And with Oracle Event Processing we’re seeing some remarkable performance with customers like NTT Docomo. Check out their upcoming session at Oracle OpenWorld on Wednesday to hear more how this customer is using Event processing and Big Data together... [Read more]
